Keynote Speakers
Sessions 5 and 6 will be introduced by keynote speakers.
- Session 5
- Steve Johnson has worked for the International Tropical Timber Organization (ITTO) in Yokohama, Japan since 1990 overseeing its work to strengthen information on tropical timber production, markets and trade. He is responsible for ITTO’s Annual Review and Assessment of the World Timber Situation in addition to many other aspects of ITTO’s work to promote sustainable tropical forest development. He is a Canadian who studied and worked in the forest sector in Vancouver, New Zealand and Australia prior to settling in Japan.

- Davide Pettenella is associate professor at the University of Padova (Italy) where he is teaching Forest products economics and Marketing of mountain products and services. He has published 210 papers in the field of forest economics and wood products marketing as a result of his research activities and field works carried out within programs financed by the European Commission, FAO, European Forest Institute, World Bank, and by Italian national and regional institutions. He will present the state of the art in responsible business practices.
Moderators
- Session 1
- Cecilia Bustos holds a master degree and a PhD. Degree in Wood Science from Université Laval Quebec, Canada on wood machining processes. She is a professor in the Department of Wood Science of the Universidad del Bío-Bío (Concepción, Chili). Her teaching and research activities are in the areas of wood machining and value added products. She is also Director of the Wood Engineering program of the Wood engineering Department at Bío-Bío University since 2004.
- Session 2
- Marie-Lise Roux (INSA Engineer) has been in charge of the CTBA Furniture Area research and development since 1988. She has been working in the finishing field for 25 years. By joining the Furniture Area, she has continued powder and water based coatings development. She has made, organized and attended many French and European studies and research projects in the Wood and Furniture Area. She has been involved in the European normalization CEN/TC/139/WG for wood finishing for external use for 10 years and has extended her skill in the CEN/TC207/WG7 for furniture coatings for 6 years.
- Session 3
- Sophie D’Amours (Ph.D. École Polytechnique de Montréal, MBA Université Laval, Canada) is a professor at the Mechanical engineering Department of Université Laval. She holds a Canada Research Chair in planning value creating network. She is also the general director of the FOR@C Research Consortium dedicated to supply chain issues within the forest product industry. She has been intensively involved in many applied research projects studying agent-based advanced planning and scheduling, integrating simulation with operational research, as well as studying emerging information technologies and business models.

- Urs Buehlmann is CEO of Buehlmann Consulting, Malibu, CA. He holds a Ph.D. in the area of wood processing and a MBA in Finance and Management from Virginia Tech. He previously obtained an engineering degree from the Swiss Institute of Wood Technology and holds a cabinet making degree from the Vocational School of Thun, Switzerland. He has been a teacher at the Department of Wood and Paper Science at North Carolina State University in Raleigh, NC for six years. Previously, Mr. Buehlmann worked for 15 years in industry positions in Europe and North America.

- Dr Robert Beauregard is holder of the Industrial Research Chair on Engineered Wood Products for Structural and Appearance applications (CIBISA). His area of expertise is the modelling of manufacturing systems for the forest industries. He develops comprehensive approaches to the design of business models taking into account the interactions between the wood resource, process development and innovative products for better business performance. In 1995-97, he was research scientist with the New Zealand Forest Research Institute. From 1997 to 2000, he has been at the Eastern Laboratory of Forintek Canada Corp. where he was instrumental in the creation of the Department for Value Added Wood Products. Robert Beauregard is a member of the Forest Products Society, of the Canadian Institute of Forestry, of the Society of Wood Science and Technology, of the Ordre des ingénieurs forestiers du Québec and of the Ordre des ingénieurs du Québec.

- Carl-Éric Guertin holds a forestry engineering degree and a Master in economy and forestry policies (community forestry specialization) from Laval University. He has been manager communication and responsible business at the Q-WEB, since 1999. He has developed an expertise in the responsible business of wood products such as forestry certification, behavior codes, public and private buying policies and illegal forestry exploitation. He assists the Q WEB members to meet with the environmental requirements of foreign buyers. In 2003, he has been mandated to develop a new behavior code which he supports in activities linked to the environmental acceptability of Canadian forestry products in the Q-WEB/FPAC partnership.
